A Week in Tuscany: general ideas & info

One of the most beautiful places in the world, with plenty of art, gogeous landscapes and villages, good weather-better to go in spring or fall- and great food and wine! What else could be better than spending a week here?

Hmmmm, spending 2. :)

I will be posting my suggestions for an itinerary, based on what I did myself which turned out to be a very good experience: First,  I would suggest finding a beautiful small town or village to stay -or two, depending on how much of a driving lover you are- rent a car and make day trips from there and then spending  2 or 3 nights in Florence -get rid of the car as you arrive there. My option was Colle di Val d'Elsa, its old town is located on the top of a small mountain -you can actually take an elevator to get up there- which has a lot to see and great restaurants.

 I stayed at La Vecchia Cartiera (in the modern town) and recommend it. It is not expensive and has a good price /quality relationship.It has a lot of history in it. Breakfast is good enough to get energy for the day and there is a good and cheap restaurant in front of it which is great for a quick dinner when you are so tired that you don't feel like going up to the old town. From Colle di Val d'Elsa, everything except for Lucca and Pisa is at a reasonable distance for a day trip.

I would suggest to fly to Firenze -more centrally located for the route- or Pisa, pick up a car at the airport and start from there.

In my itinerary you will be visiting Siena, Monteriggioni, Montepulciano, Pienza, S. Quirico d'Orcia, Bagno Vignoni, Abadia di S.Attimo, Montalcino, Arezzo, Cortona, Lucca, Pisa, Volterra, San Gimigniano and Florence of course.

What you should taste in Tuscany, Italy

I must confess that I love Italian food, that's for sure. So it was quite a pleasure to be in Tuscany and try so many things. My advise on what you should try at least once when in Italy, specially in Tuscany:

- For carnivores like me: be sure to try a Bistecca a la fiorentina -somehow similar to a T-bone steak, just delicious...
- Actual pizza, though originally from Naples, the ones I tried here were great and very different to what is being sold as pizza in the rest of the world
- For cheese lovers, you must try Pecorino cheese.
- Chianti wines: great with any meal

Para empezar, debo confesar que me encanta la comida italiana. Estar en Toscana fue un placer y no solo por el arte y el paisaje. Mis recomendaciones de lo que hay que probar:
- Para los carnívoros como yo: Bistecca a la fiorentina, deliciosa...

- Pizza de verdad, aunque es original de Nápoles, las que probé aquí no tienen nada que ver con lo que nos venden como pizza en el resto del mundo.

- Si os gusta el queso, tenéis que probar el Pecorino.

- Los vinos de la región del Chianti, geniales con cualquier comida.

Sitios que tienes que ver: Monument Valley

¿Has visto alguna vez La diligencia, Centauros del desierto o alguna de las múltiples películas en las que sale este increíble paisaje? Entonces tienes que verlo al menos una vez en directo. Date un mínimo de dos horas y un buen todo terreno (a menos que quieras someter tu coche a tortura) para disfrutar a fondo de Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.

Yo prefiero ver las cosas por mi misma, pero los indios Navajo también tours guiados en jeeps para visitar el parque. No hice ninguno así que no puedo recomendar, pero cuando estaba preparando mi viaje la opinión general era que no merecía la pena el precio a menos que tuvieras muchas horas por delante para visitarlo. De todas maneras también parece que alguno de los tours te lleva a sitios a los que no puedes acceder si vas solo, así que puede ser una opción. ¿Alguno los habéis hecho? Me gustaría leer opiniones, por favor deja un comentario si es el caso.

¿Cuándo ir? En mi opinión, el mejor momento es justo antes del atardecer, y en segundo lugar, el amanecer.

¿Lo mejor de todo? Poder ver ambos. ¿Cómo? Alójate en The View, el único hotel dentro del parque de Monument Valley. No es barato, pero merece la pena si solo vas una noche. Puedes ver opiniones aquí.

Lo ideal sería llegar al parque unas tres horas antes del atardecer para tener tiempo de disfrutarlo. Cuando se haga de noche vete a dormir pronto para ver el amanecer desde la terraza de tu habitación (las terrazas dan al este), un espectáculo impresionante difícil de olvidar.

Otra cosa estupenda que puedes hacer es observar el firmamento por la noche. The View tiene algunas habitaciones especiales para esto pero también puedes hacerlo desde cualquier sitio. Si te gusta la astronomía te encantará la total ausencia de luz, intenta hacer coincidir tu viaje con una luna nueva y tendrás u n punto perfecto de observación.

Ever seen Stagecoach, The Searchers and so many other movies featuring this fantastic landscape? Then you have to come here at least once for these massive structures... Allow at least a couple of hours and a SUV–unless you want to torture your car- to make sure you have the time to enjoy Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.

I prefer to see places by myself, but the Navajo also have guided tours in jeeps to visit the Park. I have not taken any so I can not really recommend, but when I was preparing my trip people usually said that it was not worth the price unless you had many hours to visit it. Anyway, apparently, they have some tours which take you to places where you can not go by yourself, so it can be an option. Ever taken one? I`d like to hear about it, please leave a comment.

When to visit it? In my opinion, the best time of the day is just before sunset and in second place, at sunrise.

Best of all? Being able to see it at both times.

How? Stay at The View, the only hotel inside the park of Monument Valley. It is not cheap, but it is worth it if you only spend a night. Click here for some opinions on it.

The ideal would be to arrive at the park about three hours before sunset so you have the time to enjoy it. After the sun is gone make sure you go to bed early and watch the sunrise from the balcony of your room –balconies face East- an impressive moment you won’t forget.

Another great thing to do in Monument valley is to watch the stars at night, The View has special rooms for Star watching, but you can also do that in the surroundings of the hotel. If you are an amateur astronomer you will really enjoy the total absence of light, try to choose a new moon night for your stay and you will have a perfect observation place.

Two regions for a taste of Spain

Well, this is a somehow hard post to write for me... As a Spaniard, how can I choose??? After much thinking, if I could only choose two regions for people to know two very different aspects of the same country, these would be the ones.

-Andalucía: Yes, I know, I am starting by the biggest source of clichés on Spain, but, yet, it is so magical and has such a special atmosphere after centuries of Islamic and Christian domination, that it is certainly the must-see for those who look for a different Europe. Where to go? Sevilla, Granada and Córdoba.

-Galicia: For the opposite of what you might be expecting, a green landscape with great gastronomy, impressive cliffs, old churches, celtic taste and bagpipes. Where to go? Santiago de Compostela, Costa da Morte and the Monasteries route in the Ribeira Sacra.

What a difference the time of the day when you see a place can make!

Playa de Mónsul, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been, in the middle of the Natural Park Cabo de Gata paradise, Almería. Many films have featured it , among them Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.
These pictures are very special since rainy days are pretty rare in this climate!

Razones para ver Oxford: mis impresiones

Si estás pensando en ir a Oxford mira mi entrada anterior para ver información práctica y una sugerencia de itinerario para un día.

Estas son algunas de las cosas que me encantaron de Oxford:

-         Sentir que acabas de viajar en el tiempo hasta la Edad Media cuando estás dentro de alguna de las maravillosas catedrales de los colleges.

-         Imaginarte que eres Harry Potter en su primera llegada a Hogwarts al llegar a la escalera y ver el precioso techo en Christ Church.

-         Descubrir a la verdadera Alicia que inspiró a Lewis Carroll sus bien conocidas obras mientras observas el árbol en el que se sentaba el gato de Cheshire desde el interior de la Catedral del Christ Church.

-         Disfruta del ambiente de Cornmaket Street

-         Compra recuerdos oficiales de la Universidad de Oxford en la Tienda de la Universidad.

-         Tómate un té en alguno de los cafés y relájate un ratito tras horas visitando colleges.

-         Sal de paseo en batea por el río Cherwell

-         Mira quién de todos tus escritores, políticos y filósofos de los últimos siglos estudiaron en cada college.

Reasons to go to Oxford: my impressions

If you are thinking of visiting Oxford please go check my former post for practical infomation and a day  itinerary.

These are some of the things I loved about Oxford:

- Feel like you have suddenly travelled in time to the middle ages when you are inside one of the wonderful colleges' cathedrals

- Imagine you are Harry Potter on his first arrival at Hogwarts when getting to the staircase with the marvelous vaulted ceiling at Christ Church.

-Find out more about the real Alice that inspired Lewis Carroll to write his well known works while watching the tree where the Cheshire Cat sat from inside the Cathedral at Christ Church

-Enjoy the ambience of Cornmarket street

-Get some official Oxford University souvenirs at the University of Oxford Shop

-Have tea in any of the wonderful cafes and relax for a while after hours visiting colleges

-Punt on the river Cherwell

-Find out who among your favorite writers, politicians, philosophers of all times studied in which Oxford College.

Excursiones de un día desde Londres: Oxford

Sí, es posible tener un impresión general de Oxford en un solo día, aunque si os es posible yo recomendaría quedarse al menos una noche para poder ver más colleges y disfrutar un poco del ambiente universitario.

ITINERARY FOR A DAY VISIT ITINERARIO PARA UNA VISITA DE UN DÍA:

Como itinerario para un día de invierno esta es mi sugerencia. Comprobad antes los horarios de visita de los colleges en los enlaces, ya que estos pueden variar y quizá tengáis que variar el orden de las visitas. Para el itinerario he seguido la sugerencia de la guía de Inglaterra de Lonely Planet, elegir tres colleges: el Christ Church, el New y el Magdalen.

Podéis empezar el día visitando el Christ Chruch College, de hecho si vais en el Oxfortube os queda muy cerquita. Si sois fans de Harry Potter, no os perdáis el comedor, en el que se inspiró el de Hogwarts, y  por supuesto las escaleras… Para los fans de Alicia en el país de las maravillas, Lewis Carroll pasó aquí muchos muchos años.

Después, si subís por la misma calle por la que salís llegaréis a la Carfax Tower, donde podéis disfrutar de buenas vistas de toda la ciudad. Buscad un sitio para comer- no es algo muy problemático en esta ciudad de estudiantes, quizá podéis probad en el Covered Market- y continuad para continuar la visita con el siguiente college, el New. De camino podéis parar a visitar la Biblioteca Bodleiana y ver el Puente Hetford, más conocido como el Puente de los Suspiros por su parecido con… en realidad, no con el Puente de los Suspiros de Venecia, si no con el Puente Rialto. J

Tras la visita al New College podéis terminar viendo el Magdalen. Si todavía os queda tiempo después dad un paseo por la animada Cornmarket Street.

TRANSPORTE:

Desde Londres se puede ir a Oxford en autobús- por ejemplo con el OxfordTube, que es como fui yo, y tren. Merece la pena estudiar las dos opciones, pues la mejor dependerá de varios factores, entre ellos en qué parte de Londres te alojas.

Day trips from London: Oxford

Yes! It is possible to actually get a good impression from Oxford in just one day. However, if possible I would recommend to stay at least one night to be able to see more colleges and enjoy the student atmosphere. 

ITINERARY FOR A DAY VISIT:

As an itinerary for a winter day I would suggest this -check colleges visit times before as they may vary and you might need to change the order of visits-:

In this itinerary I followed the Lonely Planet Guide to England's advise: to visit three colleges, Christ Chruch, New and Magadalen.

Start your day by visiting Christ Chruch College. If you are a Harry Potter fan you will love to see the Great Hall, which was replicated to represent the one at Hogwarts, and the staircase... This is also the college where Lewis Carroll spent many years.

Next, you can go up the street and take a look of Oxford from the top of Carfax Tower. Find a place for lunch -not a problem in a university city, perhaps you can have lunch at some of the places of the covered market- and continue to New College.

On the way, make sure you visit the Bodleian Library and see the Hetford Bridge, aka Bridge of sighs because of its resemblance to... actually, not the Bridge of Sighs in Venice but the Rialto Bridge :)

After New College you can go and visit the last college and last sight for the day: Magdalen. If you still have some time you can enjoy a walk along Cornmarket Street.

TRANSPORTATION:

From London you can get to Oxford by bus -check the OxfordTube site, this is the one I have travelled with- and train. It is worth checking both options as the one more suitable for you might depend on a series of factors, among them where in London you are staying.

Hi everyone and welcome to the first post of this blog!
For many years I have found other people's blogs and forums so useful to plan my travels and holidays that I have decided to share what I have learnt while travelling in this blog. I will be publishing tips, itineraries, ideas and some travel inspiration in general, and really hope that it will be useful for any travel lover looking for a new destination.
