Razones para ver Oxford: mis impresiones

Si estás pensando en ir a Oxford mira mi entrada anterior para ver información práctica y una sugerencia de itinerario para un día.

Estas son algunas de las cosas que me encantaron de Oxford:

-         Sentir que acabas de viajar en el tiempo hasta la Edad Media cuando estás dentro de alguna de las maravillosas catedrales de los colleges.

-         Imaginarte que eres Harry Potter en su primera llegada a Hogwarts al llegar a la escalera y ver el precioso techo en Christ Church.

-         Descubrir a la verdadera Alicia que inspiró a Lewis Carroll sus bien conocidas obras mientras observas el árbol en el que se sentaba el gato de Cheshire desde el interior de la Catedral del Christ Church.

-         Disfruta del ambiente de Cornmaket Street

-         Compra recuerdos oficiales de la Universidad de Oxford en la Tienda de la Universidad.

-         Tómate un té en alguno de los cafés y relájate un ratito tras horas visitando colleges.

-         Sal de paseo en batea por el río Cherwell

-         Mira quién de todos tus escritores, políticos y filósofos de los últimos siglos estudiaron en cada college.

Reasons to go to Oxford: my impressions

If you are thinking of visiting Oxford please go check my former post for practical infomation and a day  itinerary.

These are some of the things I loved about Oxford:

- Feel like you have suddenly travelled in time to the middle ages when you are inside one of the wonderful colleges' cathedrals

- Imagine you are Harry Potter on his first arrival at Hogwarts when getting to the staircase with the marvelous vaulted ceiling at Christ Church.

-Find out more about the real Alice that inspired Lewis Carroll to write his well known works while watching the tree where the Cheshire Cat sat from inside the Cathedral at Christ Church

-Enjoy the ambience of Cornmarket street

-Get some official Oxford University souvenirs at the University of Oxford Shop

-Have tea in any of the wonderful cafes and relax for a while after hours visiting colleges

-Punt on the river Cherwell

-Find out who among your favorite writers, politicians, philosophers of all times studied in which Oxford College.

Excursiones de un día desde Londres: Oxford

Sí, es posible tener un impresión general de Oxford en un solo día, aunque si os es posible yo recomendaría quedarse al menos una noche para poder ver más colleges y disfrutar un poco del ambiente universitario.

ITINERARY FOR A DAY VISIT ITINERARIO PARA UNA VISITA DE UN DÍA:

Como itinerario para un día de invierno esta es mi sugerencia. Comprobad antes los horarios de visita de los colleges en los enlaces, ya que estos pueden variar y quizá tengáis que variar el orden de las visitas. Para el itinerario he seguido la sugerencia de la guía de Inglaterra de Lonely Planet, elegir tres colleges: el Christ Church, el New y el Magdalen.

Podéis empezar el día visitando el Christ Chruch College, de hecho si vais en el Oxfortube os queda muy cerquita. Si sois fans de Harry Potter, no os perdáis el comedor, en el que se inspiró el de Hogwarts, y  por supuesto las escaleras… Para los fans de Alicia en el país de las maravillas, Lewis Carroll pasó aquí muchos muchos años.

Después, si subís por la misma calle por la que salís llegaréis a la Carfax Tower, donde podéis disfrutar de buenas vistas de toda la ciudad. Buscad un sitio para comer- no es algo muy problemático en esta ciudad de estudiantes, quizá podéis probad en el Covered Market- y continuad para continuar la visita con el siguiente college, el New. De camino podéis parar a visitar la Biblioteca Bodleiana y ver el Puente Hetford, más conocido como el Puente de los Suspiros por su parecido con… en realidad, no con el Puente de los Suspiros de Venecia, si no con el Puente Rialto. J

Tras la visita al New College podéis terminar viendo el Magdalen. Si todavía os queda tiempo después dad un paseo por la animada Cornmarket Street.

TRANSPORTE:

Desde Londres se puede ir a Oxford en autobús- por ejemplo con el OxfordTube, que es como fui yo, y tren. Merece la pena estudiar las dos opciones, pues la mejor dependerá de varios factores, entre ellos en qué parte de Londres te alojas.

Day trips from London: Oxford

Yes! It is possible to actually get a good impression from Oxford in just one day. However, if possible I would recommend to stay at least one night to be able to see more colleges and enjoy the student atmosphere. 

ITINERARY FOR A DAY VISIT:

As an itinerary for a winter day I would suggest this -check colleges visit times before as they may vary and you might need to change the order of visits-:

In this itinerary I followed the Lonely Planet Guide to England's advise: to visit three colleges, Christ Chruch, New and Magadalen.

Start your day by visiting Christ Chruch College. If you are a Harry Potter fan you will love to see the Great Hall, which was replicated to represent the one at Hogwarts, and the staircase... This is also the college where Lewis Carroll spent many years.

Next, you can go up the street and take a look of Oxford from the top of Carfax Tower. Find a place for lunch -not a problem in a university city, perhaps you can have lunch at some of the places of the covered market- and continue to New College.

On the way, make sure you visit the Bodleian Library and see the Hetford Bridge, aka Bridge of sighs because of its resemblance to... actually, not the Bridge of Sighs in Venice but the Rialto Bridge :)

After New College you can go and visit the last college and last sight for the day: Magdalen. If you still have some time you can enjoy a walk along Cornmarket Street.

TRANSPORTATION:

From London you can get to Oxford by bus -check the OxfordTube site, this is the one I have travelled with- and train. It is worth checking both options as the one more suitable for you might depend on a series of factors, among them where in London you are staying.
