Spanish moss?  And what is it?, you might be wondering if you have not been in this area. Well, it is a very funny plant with no roots at all that you will find all around Savannah! It is a species  (Tillandsia usneoides)  in the same family as pineapples (Bromeliaceae) growing over the trees, and feeding directly from the air's humidity, that does not lack in this land. It gives air and the whole place an air of mystery as well as lot of charm.

¿Spanish moss? ¿Y esto qué es?, os preguntaréis quizás si no habéis estado por estos lares. Pues una curiosísima planta que en Savannah podéis encontrar por todos lados y que no tiene raíces! Se trata de un especie (Tillandsia usneoides) de la misma familia que las piñas (Bromeliaceae) que crece sobre los árboles, alimentándose directamente de la humedad del aire, que aquí es mucha y que da a los árboles y a la ciudad en su conjunto un aspecto de lo más misterioso y al mismo tiempo, mucho encanto.

And the name? Welll, as you see, is neither Spanish nor moss. But it has a ver romantic legend: it owuld be the hair of a Spanish woman to whom the Cherokees would have cut it and throw over a tree as a warning that she and her husband would not settle and establish a plantation in the surroundings of Charleston around 1700. Her hair would have turn grey then and started to expand over other trees. You can read this legend in the Wikipedia and other version here.

¿Y ese nombre? Pues en realidad, como veis, ni es Spanish, ni es Moss (musgo). Pero tiene una leyenda de lo más romántica y es que se trataría del cabello de una española a quien los Cherokee se lo cortaron y tiraron sobre un árbol a modo de advertencia para que ella y su marido no establecieran una plantación en las afueras de Charleston allá por 1700. Supuestamente, su pelo se volvió gris y comenzó a expandirse por otros árboles. Podéis leer esta leyenda en la wikipedia y otras versiones aquí.

These are hush puppies -cornbread balls- and no, they were not my meal, only one of the included sides. They are very good!

Esto son hush puppies (una especie de buñuelos fritos de maíz con cebolla) y no, no son el plato principal, tan solo una de las guarniciones que incluyen. ¡Están muy buenos!

And here are Hyman's Traditional Shrimp and Grits -I wrote about grits in this other post- with bacon and cheese, it also includes gravy. I took them at Hyman's in Charleston. I know, my fellow compatriots will be scandalised at the "crime" of such a mix, but even if it also surprised my Spanish taste it was not bad at all, though it was too heavy for my European-sized stomach to finish it.

Y aquí están las gambas con puré de maíz -el famoso grits del que hablé aquí- con bacon y queson, también lleva salsa de carne. Los tomé en Hyman en Charleston. Lo sé, mis compatriotas se van a escandalizar ante semejante crimen de mezclas, pero aunque también sorprendió a mi paladar español, no estaba malo, aunque era demasiado grande para mi estómago tamaño europeo.

Spanish and French history of Louisiana is obvious in its cuisine, specially in dishes like gumbo (a soup) or jambalaya (remind of paella thoug very different). I loved both of them though I would advise against having jambalaya in a sandwich or wrap!

La historia española y francesa de Louisiana es plenamente palpable en la cocina, sobretodo en platos como  el gumbo ( una sopa) y la jambalaya (recuerda a la paella aunque es muy diferente). me encantaron ambos, pero por favor, ¡¡no toméis la jambalaya en un sándwich o en un wrap!!

Southeast US: Itinerary

Por fin! Lo prometido es deuda y aquí os traigo un itinerario por el sureste de los States basado en el que he hecho yo hace muy pero que muy poquito. Debo decir que me llevó bastante tiempo diseñarlo, sobretodo porque la zona es, como sabéis, enorme y elegir solo algunas cosas y hacerlas cuadrar no me resultó nada fácil. Algunas sitios me gustaron más, otros menos, os lo iré comentando post por post para que si os animáis, podáis adaptar el itinerario a vuestros gustos y posibilidades.

El viaje finalmente nos llevó por distintos rincones de los estados de Carolina del Norte, Carolina del Sur, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana y Mississippi.

At last! I knew I owed you this post and here I bring the itinerary round SouthEast US based on the one I have just made very little time ago. I must say it took me quite a long time to plan it, mostly because the area is, as you know, huge and choosing only some places and make them work as a tour was not easy at all. I loved some place, others... not so much. I will comment on all these in different posts so that if you decide to do this tour, you can adapt it according to your tastes and possibilities.

Our travel took us to different areas in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Lousiana and Mississippi.

Day 1/Día 1: Vuelo a Charlotte . Flight to Charlotte.

Day 2/Día 2: Salida hacia las Great Smoky Mountains. To the  Great Smoky Mountains

Day 3/Día 3: Great Smoky Mountains y Blue Ridge Parkway.  Great Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway

Day 4/Día 4: Blue Ridge Parkway hasta Boone. Blue Ridge Parkway up to Boone.

Day 5/Día 5: Charleston

Day 6/Día 6: Charleston

Day 7/Día 7: Savannah

Day 8/Día 8: Savannah

Day 9/Día 9: St. Augustine

Day 10/Día 10: Vuelta a Charlotte y vuelo a Nueva Orleans. Back to Charlotte and flight to N. Orleans.

Day 11/Día 11: Plantaciones cercanas a Nueva Orleans, Nueva Iberia y St Martinville. Plantations near N. Orleans, New Iberia and St  Martinville.

Day 12/Día 12: Rumbo a Natchez para hacer la Natchez Trace Parkway hasta Vicksburg. To Natchez to drive the Natchez Trace Parkway to Vicksburg.

Day 13/ Día 13: Parque Militar de Vicksburg y vuelta a Nueva Orleans. Vicksburg National Military Park and back to New Orleans.

Day 14/Día 14: Nueva Orleans. New Orleans

Day 15/Día 15: Nueva Orleans.New Orleans

Day 16/Día 16: Nueva Orleans y vuelo de vuelta. New Orleans anfd flight back home.

Otras opciones:

La primera decisión fue por dónde entrar. Estuvimos entre Atlanta, Georgia y Charlotte, Carolina del Norte, durante un buen tiempo y si finalmente nos decidimos por Charlotte fue porque nos salía una mejor combinación de vuelos y a mejor precio. Yo siempre miro en varios buscadores de vuelos y también con la aerolínea. Atlanta nos hubiera dado la posibilidad de hacer un viaje más circular.

Otra opción hubiera sido volar desde Jacksonville (muy cerca de St. Augustine) hasta Nueva Orleans, pero por diversas razones (combinación de vuelos, el sobrecargo que te cobran por dejar el coche de alquiler en un lugar distinto de donde lo alquilas, más escalas, etc.) decidimos darnos la paliza de volver a Charlotte y volar desde allí.

Other options:

The first decision was where to fly to. We had to decide between Atlanta, Georgia y Charlotte, North Carolina and in the end we went for Charlotte as we had a better flight combination and a better price. I always look in different flight search sites and then compare, also with the airlines websites. Atlanta would have given us the chance to make a rounder trip.

Another option would have been to fly from Jacksonville (close to St. Augustine) to New Orleans, but for a number of reasons (flights combinations, the price you have to pay when you leave your rent car at a different place, more stopovers, etc.) we drove all the way back to Charlotte and flought from there.

Gorgeous Houses of Charleston

Some of the beautiful houses that this southern city offers. In my next life I want to live in one of this and enjoy its piazzas :)
